Fractional executive leadership

A seasoned technology executive at your leadership table, for the days you need one.

Vantara's principals have served as CIO, CTO, and CDO inside law and accounting firms. We step into that seat part-time for firms that need senior technology, data, or AI leadership but don't need, or aren't ready for, a full-time hire.

The gap

Your firm makes executive technology decisions every month, usually without a technology executive.

Which AI tools to allow. Whether to renew a seven-figure system. How to answer a client's security questionnaire. What to tell the partners, the board, or the insurer after an incident. These land on a managing partner, an office manager, or an IT manager who was never meant to own them.

A full-time CIO or Chief AI Officer is hard to justify for most middle-market firms, and a months-long search is time the firm doesn't have while AI moves this fast.

A fractional executive gives you the judgment and accountability of that seat now, sized to what the firm actually needs.

Signs you need one
Technology decisions keep landing on the managing partner.
Vendors and your IT provider are setting the agenda.
Clients and insurers ask questions nobody can answer well.
Your technology leader has just left, and a search will take months.
Four fractional roles

One seat or several, filled by practitioners.

Many firms start with one role and combine two as needs grow, such as CIO and Chief AI Officer.

Fractional CDOChief Digital Officer
Reports disagree, data is scattered, and AI initiatives keep stalling on data.

Why Vantara

We have held these seats, not just advised them.

Practitioners, not advisors

Our founder has served as CIO, CTO, and CDO in law and accounting firms, including as CTO of Jackson Lewis, Chief Digital Officer of Citrin Cooperman, and CIO of Berdon, with more than 20 years in enterprise technology leadership.

We know how firms decide

Partnership economics, practice group dynamics, and client confidentiality shape every decision. We work inside those realities.

A bench behind the seat

Your fractional executive is backed by Vantara's governance, data, and implementation practices, and our delivery partners when work needs doing.

Built to hand over

We document decisions, systems, and vendors as we go, so the firm never depends on us to know how it runs.

Common questions

What leadership teams ask us.

Prefer to talk it through? Call us at 347 674-1471.

How is this different from hiring a consultant?
A consultant delivers a project and leaves. A fractional executive holds the role: attends leadership meetings, owns the roadmap and vendors, makes decisions within agreed authority, and is accountable for results over time.
Will you work with our existing IT provider or team?
Yes. We typically manage your managed service provider and internal staff rather than replace them, and hold them to clear service expectations.
What if we want a full-time executive later?
That's often the goal. We help define the role, support the search, onboard the new leader, and hand over everything we've built.
How do you handle confidentiality?
We sign confidentiality agreements, and business associate agreements where patient data is involved, and follow your firm's policies. Confidentiality is standard in the professional services firms we come from.
Can we change the time commitment?
Yes. Many firms start at two days a week during the first 90 days, then move to one day a week or advisory once priorities are running.
